Managing Director, Impact Investing

The Sorenson Impact Center Impact Investing team connects capital to social and environmental solutions and empowers organizations and investors to create positive outcomes and drive sustainable change. Proudly housed at the David Eccles School of Business, we integrate students into all that we do, driven by a mission to train the next generation of impact leaders. We call it “venture capital with vision.”

We are searching for a dynamic leader to help us advance our vision of an equitable and thriving world, where everyone is valued, communities prosper, and the measured impact of our actions guides decision-making.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned investment professional with extensive experience across the lifecycle of an investment deal including designing, fundraising, and launching new funds and financial products. Candidates should have a strong commitment to impact and bring an entrepreneurial and innovative approach to the role, able to envision new products and services, while executing on deals and implementing strategies to grow and advance our capabilities. The managing director should also have a passion for teaching and mentoring, as we work to train and inspire the next generation of impact investing professionals. In addition to well-trained students, the managing director will lead a team of investment professionals managing existing funds and impact investing mandates.

As a leader at the Center and in the impact space, candidates should have an extensive network and strong relationships with key impact investment organizations. The managing director will have extensive opportunities to serve as a thought leader and public speaker as we work to advance our work, the work of our partners, and the future of impact investing.

Responsibilities

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversight of professional staff and students
  • Expansion of the impact investing groups activities including developing and fundraising for new funds and new product and/or service offerings
  • Industry-wide thought leadership at conferences, publications, podcasts, etc.
  • Centerwide leadership as a member of the executive team
  • Interfacing with greater Center and University of Utah
  • Other tasks and responsibilities as requested

 

Preferences

  • Master’s Degree or higher in finance, business, economics or a related field
  • Ten years of progressively more responsible investment management experience
  • 10+ years of experience in direct deal private equity / VC impact investing, or LP with direct deal experience
  • Experience in fundraising and business development
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel strongly preferred

Senior Associate, Impact Investing

The Impact Investing team at Sorenson Impact Center manages the impact investing activities of high net worth families and manages several dedicated impact funds. We seek out the best impact entrepreneurs, analyze their business, structure venture investments to catalyze their growth, and support them as they scale. We integrate students into this process as part of training the next generation of impact investors. We are seeking a dynamic and passionate Senior Associate to join our growing team. 

The Senior Associate on the Impact Investing team contributes to the investment activities across multiple funds. This position is responsible for managing our deal flow pipeline, providing strategic business model analysis, financial analysis, and team support. The Senior Associate also coordinates, supervises, and trains student teams on investment analysis and assures quality of Investment Committee presentation materials. This position involves an ability to use creative problem solving in a constantly changing environment with a high degree of the unknown and occasionally requires long hours working on deals.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the development of investment analysis for presentation to foundations, funds, DFIs, family offices, and other organizations that have established impact investment portfolios
  • Identify and screen investment proposals for deals that fit impact and investment mandates
  • Build financial models and conduct financial sensitivity analysis
  • Conduct detailed business valuation exercises using various methods of valuation
  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessment on investment proposals
  • Oversee preparation of investment proposal materials
  • Support portfolio management activities including building periodic performance reports, gathering investee performance metrics, etc.
  • Lead student analysts and associates as they conduct investment due diligence and prepare investment proposal materials
  • Teach and explain areas of diligence above to a constantly rotating group of students in the program
  • Contribute to recruitment activities for student program

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration, Accounting, Finance or related field, or equivalency and four years of progressively more responsible management analyst experience; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required.

Associate, Impact Investing

QUALIFICATIONS

Also required are a thorough knowledge of established accounting principles and practices; spreadsheet and database skills; knowledge of statistics and demonstrated analytical,problem solving, human relation and effective communication skills required.

An advanced degree, such as a Master’s of Business Administration, is preferred.

Senior Associate, Impact Measurement & Evaluation

The Senior Associate would have the opportunity to join a growing team in the Data, Policy, and Performance Innovation division. We consult public, private, and social sector entities to develop impact strategy and measurement and evaluation frameworks to change corporate and social sector behavior. Measurement & Evaluation professionals play an important role in our client work, including project management, capacity building and performance. Expected day-to-day activities include; strategic planning, monitoring and evaluating, analysis and reporting. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing and supporting research, content generation, data support, and stakeholder engagement.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with the design and implementation of monitoring and evaluation projects
  • Conduct research, measurement, and evaluation to develop and manage clear measurement models
  • Monitor and refine research and evaluation goals and implementation strategies
  • Establish mechanisms for rapid feedback and learning within projects as well as for evolving a longer-term research projects/agenda(s)
  • Provide statistical, research, and evaluation design expertise to partners
  • Create and revise tools and data collection procedures (e.g. logical framework, project performance tracking, indicators, data flow chart, manuals)
  • Keep abreast of developments in project changes and progress in order to advise and recommend tools and strategies to increase performances and results
  • Contribute to the design of new strategies, portfolio development, innovative data initiatives with focus on coherent, integrated theories of change, measurable impact models, scaling, collaborations and implementation plans to ensure long-term sustainability and impact.
  • Collect, analyze, and summarize external research, identifying relevance and applicability to projects
  • Consult with partners to maximize impact of projects and ensure optimal learning. This may include: site visits, convening meetings of key stakeholders, shaping reports on key findings and coordinating on dissemination plans
  • Promote effective knowledge management activities, including translation of research knowledge to practice environments, and other activities to promote utility of research-generated knowledge in field settings
  • Review and draft RFPs and grant proposals
  • Provide clear, concise and insightful written analyses, literature reviews, and recommendations
  • This role is responsible for high quality interactions and clear and consistent communications with business partners

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science, Education, Public Health, or a related area, or equivalency; plus 2 years related experience. Demonstrated effective communications skills and a commitment to providing excellent customer service. Requires the ability to use basic statistical and qualitative methods to analyze, interpret, and report on data. Strong attention to detail and good observation skills.
